A new website starts producing enquiries once search engines can find it, you can measure what visitors do, and nearby customers can see your business and its reviews on Google. In the first 90 days, set up Search Console, Bing Webmaster Tools and GA4 conversion tracking, complete your Google Business Profile, fix slow pages, publish answers to the questions customers actually ask, and request a review from every customer. Run a small, tightly targeted Google Ads test while organic traffic builds.

This guide is for owners of small and mid-sized businesses in the UK, the US and Canada whose site has launched but is not bringing in calls or form enquiries.

Why is a new website not getting enquiries?

Usually for three reasons: search engines have not yet found and trusted the site, nobody can tell which visits become enquiries, and the business has no visible proof, such as reviews, links or a complete map listing. Fix measurement first, then visibility, then trust. Paying for traffic before you can count enquiries buys numbers you cannot evaluate.

How do you get Google and Bing to find a new site?

Register with both search engines' webmaster tools and submit your XML sitemap. It takes about an hour.

  1. Google Search Console. Add a Domain property where you can. It covers all subdomains and both http and https, and you verify it with a DNS record (Google Search Console Help, accessed Oct 2026).
  2. Submit the sitemap in the Sitemaps report, and add a Sitemap: line to robots.txt. Google calls a sitemap "merely a hint" (Google Search Central, updated 8 Jul 2026), but the report shows when Google read it and what errors it found.
  3. Bing Webmaster Tools. Use Import to bring sites across from Search Console. They are verified automatically, and their sitemaps come with them (Bing Webmaster Blog, accessed Oct 2026).
  4. Check the indexing reports weekly for the first month. A noindex tag left over from staging is a common launch mistake.

How should you set up GA4 to track enquiries?

Create an event for each way a customer can contact you: form submitted (fire it on the thank-you state), phone number tapped, WhatsApp tapped, booking completed and email clicked. Then mark each event as a key event, GA4's term for the actions that matter most to your business.

In GA4, go to Admin > Events and click the star next to an event. A standard property allows up to 30 key events, and you can create Google Ads conversions from them later for bidding (Google Analytics Help, accessed Oct 2026). While you are in Admin, set event data retention to 14 months, the longest option for a standard property. It affects only explorations and funnel reports (Google Analytics Help).

Test everything with a real enquiry from your phone. Whoever does the set-up, the accounts should be in your business's name with you as an admin. That is how we set up analytics and ad accounts for clients at Digital Architect, so the data stays with the business if the supplier changes.

Does a Google Business Profile matter if you already have a website?

Yes, for any business that serves a local area. The profile is what people see in Google Maps and the map results, and they can call you or ask for directions straight from it.

Google says local results are based mainly on relevance, distance and prominence. Prominence includes how many reviews you have and how many websites link to you, and "there's no way to request or pay for a better local ranking" (Google Business Profile Help, accessed Oct 2026). Three rules to know before you verify (Google Business Profile Help):

  • Service-area businesses such as builders, plumbers and cleaners should hide their address and set the areas they serve.
  • Virtual offices are not eligible. A co-working space qualifies only with clear signage, staff present and customers received there during business hours.
  • Use your real-world business name, with no added keywords, and the most specific category available.

What do Core Web Vitals checks involve?

They measure three things on real visits: how fast the main content appears, how quickly the page responds to a tap, and whether the layout jumps while loading. Google's "good" thresholds are (web.dev, accessed Oct 2026):

  • Largest Contentful Paint (LCP): 2.5 seconds or less.
  • Interaction to Next Paint (INP): 200 milliseconds or less. INP replaced First Input Delay in 2024.
  • Cumulative Layout Shift (CLS): 0.1 or less.

Each is measured at the 75th percentile of page loads, separately for mobile and desktop. Use Search Console's Core Web Vitals report and PageSpeed Insights. A new site with little traffic may not have enough real-user data yet, so lab-test your main templates in the meantime. The usual culprits are oversized hero images, heavy third-party scripts and late-loading fonts.

What should you write about first?

Start with the questions customers already ask you. They bring in visitors who are close to deciding, and collecting them costs nothing.

  1. Collect 20 questions from enquiry emails, sales calls, lost quotes and reviews, including the awkward ones about price.
  2. Answer the common ones on each service page: price or price drivers, timescales, process, area covered and how to get in touch.
  3. Turn the rest into articles at a pace you can sustain. Two well-researched pieces a month beat eight thin ones.
  4. From month two, use Search Console's Performance report. It shows the queries you appear for, with clicks, impressions, click-through rate and position (Search Console Help, accessed Oct 2026). Queries with many impressions and few clicks show which page to improve next.

Avoid cloning a page for every nearby town with only the place name changed.

How do you get your first reviews?

Ask every customer, at the same point in the job, with a direct review link or QR code (Google Business Profile Help, accessed Oct 2026). Offer nothing in return: Google says incentives such as "free or discounted goods or services" for reviews are "strictly prohibited". The law has tightened too:

  • UK. Since 6 April 2025, fake reviews and reviews that conceal an incentive have been banned practices under the Digital Markets, Competition and Consumers Act 2024. Suppressing genuine negative reviews is also caught (CMA fake reviews guidance, 4 Apr 2025).
  • US. The FTC's Consumer Reviews and Testimonials Rule took effect on 21 October 2024. It bars incentives that depend on a review being positive or negative, and it bars intimidation or unfounded legal threats used to suppress negative reviews (FTC, accessed Oct 2026).

Reply to every review within a working day or two. Answer complaints calmly in a line or two, then move the conversation to a private channel.

How should you capture email addresses?

Offer something useful in exchange, such as a price guide, a checklist or a follow-up quote, and send only what people signed up for. The consent rules differ by country:

  • UK (PECR). Marketing emails to individuals need specific consent, such as an unticked box the person ticks. The exception is the "soft opt-in" for existing customers who bought, or negotiated to buy, something similar and were offered a simple opt-out at collection and in every message. Sole traders and some partnerships count as individuals (ICO, accessed Oct 2026).
  • US (CAN-SPAM). The law works on an opt-out model and makes no exception for business-to-business email. Each email needs accurate headers, an honest subject line, disclosure that it is an advertisement, your physical postal address and a working opt-out. Opt-outs must be honoured within 10 business days (FTC, accessed Oct 2026).
  • Canada (CASL). You need consent before sending, and each message must identify you and include an unsubscribe mechanism. Unsubscribe requests must be processed within 10 business days. Implied consent from a purchase generally lasts up to two years, and from an enquiry only six months, so ask for express consent early (Government of Canada, accessed Oct 2026).

Is a small Google Ads test worth running?

Yes, if you treat it as research. Within weeks, a small test shows which searches turn into enquiries, long before organic search can tell you.

  • One service, one area, one landing page. Pick the service with the best margin and the clearest search terms.
  • Location: Google recommends "Presence or interest" on Search, but its "Presence" option targets only people in your chosen locations (Google Ads Help, accessed Oct 2026). A business serving one county or metro area usually wants Presence.
  • Keywords: a short list of purchase-intent phrases, with negatives for jobs, training, DIY and "free".
  • Conversions: import your GA4 key events, and count calls only above a minimum length.
  • Budget: a fixed daily amount you accept as the cost of research, for four to six weeks, judged on cost per enquiry.

They come from organisations that already have a reason to mention you: trade bodies and accreditation schemes, your chamber of commerce, suppliers that list approved installers or stockists, local news coverage of a real project, partner businesses and clubs you sponsor.

Google treats buying links, excessive link swaps, low-quality directories and keyword-stuffed guest posts as link spam. Paid or sponsored links are fine if they carry rel="sponsored" or rel="nofollow" (Google Search Central, updated 28 Aug 2026).

Every enquiry form, analytics tag and mailing list collects personal data, so some rules apply from launch day. This is general information, not legal advice. Check your own situation with a qualified adviser.

UK: UK GDPR and PECR

  • Privacy notice. At the point of collection, tell people who you are, why you collect their data, your lawful basis, who receives it, how long you keep it and what their rights are (ICO, accessed Oct 2026).
  • Data protection fee. Organisations that use personal information, including sole traders, must pay the ICO fee unless exempt (ICO).
  • Cookies. Following the Data (Use and Access) Act 2025, PECR has five exceptions to the consent rule. One covers analytics whose sole purpose is statistics about how your site is used, so you can improve it. Visitors must still get clear information and a simple, free way to object, and a third-party provider qualifies only if it acts for you and uses the data solely for that purpose. Advertising cookies, including ad measurement, still need consent (ICO, accessed Oct 2026). If your GA4 property feeds Google Ads, assume it needs consent unless your adviser says otherwise.

US: CCPA/CPRA, where it applies

The CCPA covers for-profit businesses that do business in California and meet one of three tests: gross annual revenue of $26.625 million or more (the figure effective 1 January 2025); buying, selling or sharing the personal information of 100,000 or more California residents or households; or earning 50% or more of revenue from selling or sharing it (California Privacy Protection Agency, accessed Oct 2026). A covered business that shares data for cross-context behavioral advertising needs a "Do Not Sell or Share My Personal Information" (or "Your Privacy Choices") link, and must honour opt-out signals such as Global Privacy Control. Many other states have their own privacy laws with different thresholds (IAPP state tracker).

Canada: PIPEDA and CASL

PIPEDA applies to private-sector organisations handling personal information in commercial activity. Alberta, British Columbia and Quebec have their own substantially similar laws, but information that crosses provincial or national borders stays under PIPEDA (Office of the Privacy Commissioner of Canada, accessed Oct 2026). For email, CASL applies as described above.

What should a monthly report show?

Enquiries, where they came from, and what changes next month. Keep page one to five numbers:

  1. Enquiries by type (forms, calls, WhatsApp, bookings) and by source (organic, map profile, ads, email, direct).
  2. Cost per enquiry for paid channels.
  3. Search Console clicks and impressions, plus the five queries that grew most.
  4. Google Business Profile calls, website clicks and direction requests.
  5. New reviews and average rating.

Then list three actions for next month, each with an owner, and check the numbers against the quotes you sent and the jobs you booked.

A 90-day plan for a newly launched website

Days 1–30: measure and get found

  1. Verify Search Console and Bing Webmaster Tools, and submit the sitemap.
  2. Set up GA4 key events for forms, calls, WhatsApp and bookings, and test each one.
  3. Claim, verify and complete your Google Business Profile.
  4. Publish a privacy notice and the right cookie set-up for your market. Pay the ICO fee if you are UK-based.
  5. Run PageSpeed Insights on your main templates and fix the worst problems.

Days 31–60: answer questions and ask for proof

  1. Rewrite each service page around customers' real questions.
  2. Ask every customer for a review, and reply to every review.
  3. Add one email sign-up offer with consent wording for each country you sell to.
  4. Launch the Google Ads test.
  5. Approach five organisations with a real reason to link to you.

Days 61–90: adjust

  1. Use Search Console queries and the ads' search terms to choose your next two articles.
  2. Move ad budget to keywords that produce enquiries, or pause the test.
  3. Recheck Core Web Vitals now that you have real traffic.
  4. Send the first monthly report and agree next quarter's priorities.

If the site itself is the bottleneck, because it is slow, hard to update or missing service pages, fix that first. Our website development page covers how we build sites with tracking and search set-up included, and our process shows how we plan and price work before it starts.

Frequently asked questions

How long does it take for a new website to get enquiries?

Map listings and paid ads can produce enquiries within weeks. Organic search for competitive services usually takes several months, which is why the plan runs a small ad test alongside it.

What counts as a conversion for a service business?

Any action that starts a conversation: a submitted form, a tapped phone number, a WhatsApp message or a completed booking. Track each as a separate GA4 key event.

Can I offer a discount for Google reviews?

No. Google prohibits incentives for reviews, and UK and US law restrict incentivised and fake reviews.

Possibly not. The statistical purposes exception can cover analytics used only to improve your site, if you give clear information and a simple way to object. Anything linked to advertising still needs consent.

Does CCPA apply to a small business outside California?

Only if it does business in California and meets one of the thresholds. Most small service businesses do not, but check the laws of the other states your customers are in.
