iPhone Duo app development in India: update, rebuild or build new (2026 costs in ₹)

Your iPhone app already runs on iPhone Duo, but unless it is built with Apple's iOS 27.1 SDK it won't use the whole screen: open the phone and older apps sit in the centre with empty space around them. Most apps need an update, not a rebuild: move to the new SDK, fix layouts for both displays, test, and add new screenshots. In India we do this from ₹80,000; a rebuild starts at ₹2,50,000 and a new Duo-ready app at ₹3,00,000, with the final price fixed in writing.

What changes for apps on iPhone Duo?

iPhone Duo is Apple's first foldable iPhone. Apple announced it on 9 September 2026 and it ships with iOS 27.1. Closed, it is a phone with a 5.4-inch outer display; open, it has a 7.6-inch inner display (Apple Newsroom UK). It went on sale in India on 23 October 2026, starting at ₹2,99,900 for 256GB (Apple Newsroom India).

That price matters. People who buy a ₹3 lakh phone are often your most valuable customers, so a broken layout costs you the users you can least afford to lose.

What they see depends on which version of Apple's software development kit (SDK) your app was last built with. Apple sets out three cases (Apple Developer, accessed Nov 2026):

The last row is the goal, but not a switch you flip. Apple warns that before shipping on the iOS 27.1 SDK you must make sure your content adapts to the bars becoming vertical. Skip that check and you swap empty space for broken screens.

How can you tell if your app is ready for iPhone Duo?

You don't need the phone to get a first answer. Ask your developer these questions, or ask us:

• Which SDK was the current App Store version built with? Anything older than iOS 27.1 is not yet optimised.
• Do screens size themselves from the whole screen rather than the app's own window? On iPhone Duo the app's size "doesn't always match the size of the screen", says Apple.
• Does the app check its size only once? "A fold can resize your app in the middle of a session." An app that doesn't notice keeps a phone layout on a much larger display.
• Does it choose a layout by whether the phone is upright or sideways? On iPhone Duo, "the device's orientation doesn't tell you what shape your app is".
• Does it assume a wide screen means an iPad, or look for specific iPhone screen sizes? Apple says such code will show iPad layouts on iPhone, or won't recognise iPhone Duo.
• Do banners, product photos or videos run edge to edge? On the wider display these "can lose important content", such as a face, a price or a logo.

Apple gives developers an AI "resizability skill" in Xcode that scans for these problems, but in Apple's words it "finds most issues, but not all of them". A person still has to review and test every screen, using the iPhone Duo simulator in Xcode 27.1 ("the best way to test the full native experience", says Apple), the resizable simulator in Device Hub, and iPhone Mirroring on macOS 27.

Update, rebuild or build new: which does your app need?

Most apps need an update. A rebuild only makes sense when the code itself is the problem.

A quick test: ask your developer how long a one-line text change would take to reach the App Store. If the answer is "a day or two", you need an update. If it involves missing source code, an outdated framework or a freelancer nobody can reach, a rebuild is often cheaper than patching. Planning a new app anyway? What does an iPhone Duo update involve?

In plain words, five pieces of work.

1. Move the app to the iOS 27.1 SDK. This is what tells iPhone Duo your app is ready for the full display. Old libraries that block the move are dealt with first.
2. Fix the layouts. Every screen is checked on the outer display, the inner display and while the phone folds or unfolds mid-task, so a checkout, booking or patient record carries on where the user left off. Both displays share the same aspect ratio, which Apple says lets apps "transition smoothly from the outer display to the inner display".
3. Use the bigger screen where it earns its keep. On the inner display, a shopping app can show the list and the product side by side; Microsoft Word places "formatting tools alongside a document". NYT Cooking shows more detailed recipes when the phone is partially folded on a counter (Apple Newsroom India), and a new hinge API "lets apps respond to the angle of the display". Not every app needs this, and we will say plainly whether yours does.
4. Test in Apple's iPhone Duo simulator, the resizable simulator and iPhone Mirroring, and across current iPhone sizes, so nothing breaks for your other users.
5. Screenshots and submission. New iPhone Duo screenshots, the App Store submission, and replies to anything App Review raises.

Layouts must also follow the app's window because of Split View: people "can open two apps side by side on iPhone for the first time".

What about App Store screenshots and the iPhone Duo badge?

App Store Connect now has two iPhone Duo screenshot sizes: 1398 × 2034 pixels for the outer display and 2007 × 2853 pixels for the inner display, in portrait, with landscape versions also accepted (App Store Connect Help, accessed Nov 2026).

• The badge. When you submit iPhone Duo screenshots, your product page shows a badge telling people the app is optimised for iPhone Duo; Apple's newsroom calls it a "Made for iPhone Duo" badge. For someone comparing two apps, it signals that you look after yours.
• The deadline. "Starting in April 2027, screenshots will be required for any app using the iOS 27.1 SDK or later." Once you update, they stop being optional.

Inner-display screenshots should show what the larger screen does better, not a stretched phone screen. That is design work, and it is part of our update.

How much does iPhone Duo app work cost in India?

Published Indian figures are for building whole apps, and they vary widely. Zartek, a Kochi studio, says a tightly scoped MVP with three to five core features on one platform is achievable for ₹3–5 lakh (Zartek). Digittrix lists ₹6,00,000 to ₹12,00,000 for a basic business app (Digittrix). eCorpIT puts mid-level iOS apps with real integrations at ₹10,00,000 to ₹40,00,000 (eCorpIT). These are vendor estimates, not official data. An iPhone Duo update is a far smaller job than a new app, so it costs a fraction of those figures.

Apple's fees are separate: the Apple Developer Program costs US$99 a year, shown in rupees at enrolment (Apple Developer, accessed Nov 2026). If you sell inside the app, the App Store Small Business Program charges a 15% commission to developers with up to US$1 million in proceeds in the previous calendar year (Apple Developer, accessed Nov 2026).

What should Indian businesses check before hiring an app developer?

Whoever you hire, check four things.

The Apple developer account is in your company's name. Enrolling as an organisation needs a D-U-N-S Number, a nine-digit number assigned by Dun & Bradstreet, and the organisation must be a legal entity. Your company's name then appears as the seller on the App Store (Apple Developer, accessed Nov 2026). If your app sits in a freelancer's personal account, moving it comes first.

Personal data is handled with the DPDP Act in mind. The Digital Personal Data Protection Rules, 2025, which put the DPDP Act, 2023 into operation, were notified on 14 November 2025 with an 18-month phased compliance timeline. They require clear, standalone consent notices and prompt notice to people affected by a data breach (PIB, accessed Nov 2026). The government has discussed bringing some deadlines forward, so confirm current dates with your adviser. If your developer will see patient or customer data, agree in writing how it is protected. The price is fixed in writing. Open-ended hourly estimates are how small updates become large bills. Agree the scope, deliverables and price on paper before work begins.

Payments are staged. Pay against milestones you can see, such as an approved design, a working build and App Store approval, not most of the money up front.

Frequently asked questions

Will my app stop working on iPhone Duo?

No. Apple says apps built with the iOS 26 SDK or earlier "run on iPhone Duo, but won't adapt to all layouts" (Apple Developer). With the phone open, the app appears in the centre of the display with empty space around it. It works; it just looks unfinished.

Do I have to update before April 2027?

Not because of the screenshot rule. From April 2027, iPhone Duo screenshots are required for apps using the iOS 27.1 SDK or later. An app left on an older SDK isn't caught by that rule, but it keeps the centred, boxed-in look on iPhone Duo.

Do I need to buy an iPhone Duo to test my app?

No. Apple's iPhone Duo simulator in Xcode 27.1 is, in Apple's words, the best way to test the full native experience.

What if I don't know who built my app or where the code is?
