Your iPhone app still runs on iPhone Duo, but unless it was rebuilt with Apple's iOS 27.1 SDK it will not use the folding screen properly. Older apps sit in the middle of the open display with empty space around them. Most UK businesses need an update, not a new app: with us that starts from £2,500, a rebuild from £4,000 and a new Duo-ready app from £8,000, fixed in writing before work starts.
This guide is for UK founders, SME owners, charity teams, marketing heads and product managers who have an iPhone app and want to know what Apple's foldable means for it.
What changes for apps on iPhone Duo?
iPhone Duo is Apple's first foldable iPhone. Apple announced it on 9 September 2026, opened pre-orders on 16 October and started sales on 23 October, with 28 more countries and regions from 30 October. It has a 5.4-inch outer display and a 7.6-inch inner display, ships with iOS 27.1 and starts at £1,999 in the UK.
That price matters to you. The people opening your app on a Duo have just spent two thousand pounds on a phone. They are often your most valuable customers, and they notice when an app looks unfinished.
What they see depends on which version of Apple's software kit (the SDK) your app was last built with. Apple's Prepare your app for iPhone Duo page (accessed Nov 2026) sets out three cases:
| Last built with | What users see on iPhone Duo |
|---|---|
| iOS 26 SDK or earlier | The app runs "but won't adapt to all layouts". When the phone is open, it appears "in the center of the display, with empty space surrounding the window". |
| iOS 27 SDK | The app resizes "to fill most of the inner display", but still keeps clear of the status bar on the right edge. |
| iOS 27.1 SDK or later | The app is "optimized for iPhone Duo". It uses the full display, and toolbars and tab bars appear vertically below the status bar. |
The last row has a catch. Apple warns that before shipping with the 27.1 SDK, you must make sure your content adapts to the bars becoming vertical. A plain rebuild can break screens never designed for it.
Adapted apps can do much more. Both displays share an aspect ratio, so an app carries on smoothly when the phone opens. Apps can change layout by pose: Apple describes MLB showing a live game on the upright half and stats on the flat half. Split View runs two apps side by side on iPhone for the first time.
How can you tell if your app is ready for iPhone Duo?
You can get a fair answer in an afternoon, without reading any code.
- Ask which SDK the latest App Store build used. Your developer, or whoever has access to App Store Connect, can tell you. If the answer is iOS 26 or earlier, your app shows the centred window with empty space around it.
- Look at it in Apple's iPhone Duo simulator. Apple calls the simulator in Xcode 27.1 "the best way to test the full native experience". A developer can show you your app open, closed, half-folded and rotated.
- Check your App Store page. Apps that submit iPhone Duo screenshots get a badge on their product page. No badge usually means no Duo work has been done yet.
- Read recent reviews and support emails. Comments about blank space or cut-off images on a "new iPhone" are a clear sign.
Update, rebuild or build new: which does your app need?
Most apps need an update. A rebuild only makes sense when the existing code is in poor shape, and a new app only when you are starting from scratch or the current app no longer fits your business.
| Your situation | What you probably need | Why |
|---|---|---|
| A working app, maintained in the last year or two, built in Swift or a maintained cross-platform framework | Update | The code can be moved to the iOS 27.1 SDK and its layouts fixed screen by screen. |
| An old codebase nobody has touched for years, a framework that is no longer maintained, or a previous developer who has gone | Rebuild | Fixing it costs nearly as much as rebuilding, and the problems return with every iOS release. |
| No app yet, or an app that no longer matches how your business works | New app | You can design for both displays and every pose from day one, instead of retrofitting them later. |
If you are unsure, the free check described at the end of this article answers this question for your specific app. For new apps, our guide on how to scope an MVP helps you decide what goes into version one.
What does an iPhone Duo update involve?
An iPhone Duo update is not a redesign. It is a careful pass through every screen so the app behaves well at any size and shape. Apple's guidance names five common problems:
- The app measures the whole screen, not its own window. On Duo, your app's window changes size when the phone folds or unfolds, and it is not always the size of the screen. Layouts must follow the window.
- The app checks its size once and never again. Apple says "a fold can resize your app in the middle of a session". A checkout, form or video player has to adjust while someone is using it, without losing what they typed.
- The app chooses its layout from portrait or landscape. Apple is blunt: "the device's orientation doesn't tell you what shape your app is". Layout should depend on the space available.
- The app assumes a wide screen means an iPad, or looks for exact phone sizes. On Duo, an iPhone app can be wide. Code that shows an iPad layout, or checks for a list of known iPhone sizes, gets it wrong.
- Photos and video get cropped. Full-bleed images and video can lose important content on the wider display, such as a product, a face or a caption.
Apple gives developers an AI "resizability skill" in Xcode that scans a project for these patterns. It helps, but Apple itself says it "finds most issues, but not all of them". A person still has to review each screen and test it.
Testing uses Apple's own tools: the iPhone Duo simulator in Xcode 27.1, the resizable simulator in Device Hub (which simulates opening, closing, folding and rotating), and iPhone Mirroring on macOS 27. Then come new App Store screenshots and a fresh submission for Apple's review.
What about App Store screenshots and the iPhone Duo badge?
Apple's screenshot specifications (accessed Nov 2026) add two iPhone Duo sizes: 1398 × 2034 pixels for the outer display and 2007 × 2853 pixels for the inner display, in portrait.
Two points matter for a business owner:
- They become required. "Starting in April 2027, screenshots will be required for any app using the iOS 27.1 SDK or later."
- They earn a badge. When you submit iPhone Duo screenshots, your App Store page shows a badge saying the app is optimised for iPhone Duo. Apple's UK newsroom calls it a "Made for iPhone Duo" badge.
The inner-display screenshots are your shop window to Duo owners, so they should show the wider layouts at their best.
How much does iPhone Duo app work cost in the UK?
UK app prices vary widely, and most published figures come from agencies, so treat them as vendor estimates rather than official data. Magora says most UK startup MVPs with one or two core journeys land between £10,000 and £25,000, excluding VAT. Rocking Tech reports that the median UK contractor charges £575 a day, based on ITJobsWatch data from July 2026, and that most funded startups spend £30,000 to £60,000 on a custom MVP.
Apple's own fees sit on top of any build cost. The Apple Developer Program is US$99 per membership year, or the local-currency equivalent. Under the App Store Small Business Program, developers with up to US$1 million in proceeds pay a reduced 15% commission on paid apps and in-app purchases.
Our prices for iPhone Duo work in pounds
| Work | What it covers | Price |
|---|---|---|
| iPhone Duo update of an existing iOS app | Rebuild on the iOS 27.1 SDK, fix layouts for both displays and all poses, test in Apple's simulators, new App Store screenshots, submit for review | from £2,500 |

| New app, Duo-ready from day one | iPhone, or iPhone and Android | from £8,000 |
These are "from" prices. Your final price is fixed in writing before any work starts, after a free 30-minute call, and the written plan and fixed price arrive within 5 to 7 business days. You can see our wider UK pricing on our website and app development page for UK clients.
Can a studio in India handle iPhone Duo work for a UK business?
Yes, and here is exactly how. We have no UK office. Our head office is in LB Nagar, Hyderabad, with a studio in Bengaluru, and we work with UK clients remotely.
- Calls at UK-friendly hours. We take calls from 5:30 am to 6 pm UK time (6:30 am to 7 pm during British Summer Time), every day.
- Prices in pounds. You are quoted in pounds and pay by ordinary UK bank transfer.
- UK GDPR handled properly. If your app holds personal data and we need access to it while we work, we act as your processor. The ICO's guidance on contracts says a written contract must be in place whenever a controller uses a processor, so we sign one with you before we touch any data.
- Everything in your name. The code, the Apple developer account and App Store Connect stay with your organisation.
- UK proof. We built Build-Hive, a construction SaaS for builders in Oxfordshire. We built the core platform in 12 weeks: the web platform is live, and the native iOS and Android apps are built and tested.
What about Android foldables?
We build for both. If your customers use Android foldables as well as iPhone Duo, we plan layouts that adapt on both platforms. Native Android apps are written in Kotlin, and cross-platform apps in Flutter, chosen per project. Our mobile app development service explains how we pick.
How Digital Architect handles iPhone Duo work, end to end
The whole service, with prices in every currency, is on our iPhone Duo app development page.
- A free iPhone Duo check. Use the form below this article to send your App Store link. Within two working days we email back what your app most likely needs and what that would cost.
- A free 30-minute call. We go through the findings with you, along with your plans for the app.
- A written plan and fixed price within 5 to 7 business days. Scope, timeline and price are agreed in writing before work starts.
- Design in Figma before code. You see how each key screen looks on the outer display, the inner display and when half-folded, and approve it first.
- Weekly progress, with a working build every two weeks. Builds arrive through TestFlight, Apple's testing app, so your team can try them on their own iPhones.
- Screenshots and submission done for you. We create the new App Store screenshots and handle Apple's review.
- Everything in your name. Code, Apple developer account and App Store Connect stay with you. We treat security and privacy as part of the build, not an add-on.
- After launch, if you want it. We can run App Store optimisation, SEO and ads so the app keeps finding customers.
We have done this end to end before. We designed and built Bharosa, a mental-health platform in India with a patient app, a doctor app and a care portal, more than 350 screens in all. The patient app reached the App Store and Google Play in 10 weeks.
Frequently asked questions
Will my app stop working on iPhone Duo?
No. Apple says apps built with the iOS 26 SDK or earlier still run on iPhone Duo. When the phone is open, the app appears in the centre of the display with empty space around it. It works, but it looks unfinished on a £1,999 phone.
Do I have to update before April 2027?
Not as such. From April 2027, iPhone Duo screenshots become required for apps that use the iOS 27.1 SDK or later. If you stay on an older SDK, the rule does not apply, but your app keeps the centred, boxed-in look and misses the badge.
How long does an iPhone Duo update take?
It depends on how many screens your app has and the state of the code. Your written plan states the timeline before work starts, and you see a working build every two weeks.
Can you update an app another agency built?
Yes, as long as you can give us the source code and access to your Apple developer account. If the code turns out to be beyond sensible repair, we say so in the plan and price a rebuild instead.
Is iPhone Duo work worth it for a small business?
If your app earns money or bookings from iPhone users, usually yes. The free check tells you what your app needs before you spend anything.
