Most existing iPhone apps still run on iPhone Duo, but apps built with the iOS 26 SDK or earlier open as a small window in the center of the inner display, surrounded by empty space. To fill both displays properly, an app needs to be rebuilt on the iOS 27.1 SDK, with layouts fixed and tested for every shape the phone can take. For most well-built apps that is an update, which we quote from $3,000. Apps on an old or abandoned codebase may need a rebuild, from $4,500, and a new app built Duo-ready from day one starts at $10,000.

This guide is for US founders, small-business owners, marketing heads and product managers who have an iPhone app and want to know what iPhone Duo means for it, without the developer jargon.

What changes for apps on iPhone Duo?

iPhone Duo is Apple's first foldable iPhone. Apple announced it on September 9, 2026, opened pre-orders on October 16 and began sales on October 23, with 28 more countries and regions from October 30. It has a 5.4-inch outer display and a 7.6-inch inner display, ships with iOS 27.1, and starts at $1,999 in the US (Apple Newsroom).

People buying a $1,999 phone are often your most valuable customers. What they see depends on which version of Apple's software kit (the SDK) your app was last built with (Apple Developer, accessed Nov 2026):

Built withWhat happens on iPhone Duo
iOS 26 SDK or earlierThe app runs, but "won't adapt to all layouts". When the phone is open, it appears "in the center of the display, with empty space surrounding the window".
iOS 27 SDKThe app resizes "to fill most of the inner display", but still keeps clear of the status bar on the right edge.
iOS 27.1 SDK or laterThe app is "optimized for iPhone Duo". It uses the full display, and toolbars and tab bars move to a vertical position below the status bar.

Apple adds a warning: before you ship on the 27.1 SDK, make sure your content adapts to those bars becoming vertical. Rebuilding without checking the layouts can make things worse.

The best apps go further. Both displays share an aspect ratio, so a well-made app carries on smoothly when the phone opens. Apps can change layout by pose: MLB shows the live game on the upright half and stats below when the phone is propped up. And Split View lets two apps run side by side on iPhone for the first time (Apple Newsroom).

How can you tell if your app is ready for iPhone Duo?

Ask your developer, or check yourself, against these signs:

  • Which SDK was the last release built with? If it is iOS 26 or earlier, Duo owners see your app as a centered window with empty space around it.
  • Does the layout break when the phone folds mid-task? Apple says "a fold can resize your app in the middle of a session", and apps that measure the screen once at launch don't notice.
  • Is the layout sized from the whole screen rather than the app's own window? On Duo, those are no longer the same.
  • Does the app decide its layout from how the phone is turned? Apple is blunt: "the device's orientation doesn't tell you what shape your app is."
  • Does the app assume a wide screen means an iPad? Code that shows an iPad layout whenever the screen is wide, or that checks for specific iPhone screen sizes, will misbehave on Duo.
  • Do hero photos and videos get cropped badly? Full-bleed images can lose the important part on the wider inner display.

Apple has added an AI "resizability skill" to Xcode that scans a project for these patterns. Apple's own words are that it "finds most issues, but not all of them", so a person still has to review the fixes and test every screen (Apple Developer, accessed Nov 2026).

If you don't know the answers, our free iPhone Duo check (the form below this article) will tell you.

Update, rebuild or build new: which does your app need?

Most apps need an update. A rebuild only makes sense when the existing code would cost more to fix than to replace.

Your situationWhat we recommendFrom
Native iOS app (Swift or SwiftUI) or a maintained cross-platform app, built in the last few yearsUpdate: rebuild on the iOS 27.1 SDK, fix layouts for both displays and every pose, test, new screenshots, submit$3,000
Old codebase, a framework that is no longer maintained, or a previous developer who has gone and left no documentationRebuild: a new app that keeps your brand, data and users$4,500
No app yet, or a new productNew app, Duo-ready from day one, for iPhone or for iPhone and Android$10,000

The deciding questions: can the current code be built on Apple's latest tools, is it documented, and do you own it? If not, a rebuild is often cheaper over a few years than repeated patching. Our guide on how to scope an MVP explains how to keep a rebuild or a new app small.

What does an iPhone Duo update involve?

In plain terms, an update has five parts.

  1. Moving to Apple's latest tools. The app is rebuilt on the iOS 27.1 SDK, which is what earns the "optimized for iPhone Duo" behavior. Third-party libraries in the app may need updating too.
  2. Making each screen respond to the space it actually has. Screens stop assuming they own the whole phone, and they re-arrange themselves whenever the phone folds, unfolds or shares the display in Split View.
  3. Fixing the navigation bars. Tab bars and toolbars move to a vertical position on the inner display, so menus, buttons and anything near the right edge are checked.
  4. Using the extra room well. On the larger display, a list and its detail can sit side by side, and images are framed so nothing important is cropped. For some apps, a layout for the half-folded pose is worth adding.
  5. Testing every shape. Apple names the iPhone Duo simulator in Xcode 27.1 as "the best way to test the full native experience", alongside a resizable simulator in Device Hub that simulates opening, closing, folding and rotating, and iPhone Mirroring on macOS 27 (Apple Developer, accessed Nov 2026). We test every screen in the iPhone Duo simulator, folded, unfolded and half-folded.

The iOS 27.1 SDK also adds a hinge feature that responds to the angle of the display. We use it when it serves your customers, not for show.

What about App Store screenshots and the iPhone Duo badge?

iPhone Duo has its own screenshot sizes in App Store Connect: 1398 × 2034 pixels for the outer display and 2007 × 2853 pixels for the inner display, in portrait. When you submit them, your product page shows a badge telling people the app is optimized for iPhone Duo (App Store Connect Help, accessed Nov 2026). Apple's newsroom calls it a "Made for iPhone Duo" badge.

There is also a deadline: "Starting in April 2027, screenshots will be required for any app using the iOS 27.1 SDK or later." Screenshots sell the app, so we design them rather than just capturing the simulator.

How much does iPhone Duo app work cost in the US?

For context, US agency rates are high. Decipher Zone puts blended North American rates at $100 to $200 an hour and a mid-complexity app built by a US or UK team at $120,000 to $220,000 (Decipher Zone). goLance lists senior mobile developers in the US and Canada at $130 to $190 an hour, and a standard app with payments, push notifications and an admin panel at $50,000 to $150,000 (goLance). Arc reports a worldwide median of $61 to $80 an hour for freelance iOS developers (Arc, accessed Nov 2026). These are vendor and marketplace estimates, not official data, and they cover whole apps, not Duo updates.

Two Apple costs apply whoever builds your app. The Apple Developer Program costs $99 per membership year (Apple Developer). The App Store Small Business Program cuts Apple's commission to 15% for developers with up to $1 million in proceeds in the prior calendar year (Apple Developer).

Our prices in US dollars

WorkFrom
iPhone Duo update of an existing iOS app: rebuild on the iOS 27.1 SDK, fix layouts for both displays and all poses, test in Apple's simulators, new App Store screenshots, submit for review$3,000
Rebuild of an app that can't sensibly be updated (old codebase or an abandoned framework)$4,500
New app, Duo-ready from day one (iPhone, or iPhone and Android)$10,000

These are starting prices. Your final price is fixed in writing before any work starts, after a free 30-minute call, and it doesn't change unless you change the scope. Clients in Canada, Australia, the UAE and elsewhere are quoted in US dollars too.

Can a studio in India handle iPhone Duo work for a US business?

Yes. We have no US office: our head office is in Hyderabad and our studio in Bengaluru, and we work with clients in the US, Canada, the UK and India.

  • Calls that fit your day. We take calls from 11 am to 11:30 pm IST, every day. While US standard time applies, that is 12:30 am to 1 pm Eastern and 9:30 pm to 10 am Pacific: in practice, mornings, up to 1 pm Eastern.
  • A fixed price in US dollars, agreed in writing before work starts.
  • Everything in your name. The code repository, your Apple developer account and App Store Connect stay in your company's name, with us added as team members. Apple shows the organization's name as the seller on the App Store (Apple Developer).
  • A contract that assigns the intellectual property to you, so the work you pay for belongs to you.
  • Children's privacy. If your app is directed at children under 13, COPPA applies, including to mobile apps that send or receive information online (FTC, accessed Nov 2026). We build consent and data handling around it.

On every job we touch only the data the work needs, and we host backends on AWS when an app needs one.

What about Android foldables?

We build for both platforms. When a client needs Android too, we choose native Kotlin or cross-platform Flutter according to the app's scope, and plan layouts for large and folding screens from the start, rather than treating them as an afterthought.

Frequently asked questions

Will my app stop working on iPhone Duo?

No. Apple says apps built with the iOS 26 SDK or earlier "run on iPhone Duo". When the phone is open, though, the app appears in the center of the display "with empty space surrounding the window" (Apple Developer, accessed Nov 2026). It works, but it looks unfinished on a $1,999 phone.

Do I have to update before April 2027?

Not as a blanket rule. From April 2027, Apple requires iPhone Duo screenshots for any app using the iOS 27.1 SDK or later (App Store Connect Help, accessed Nov 2026). Apple's current upload rule, in force since April 28, 2026, requires the iOS 26 SDK, and it has raised that minimum in past springs (Apple Developer). Once you move to 27.1, plan the screenshots with the update.

Is rebuilding on the new SDK enough?

No. On the 27.1 SDK, toolbars and tab bars turn vertical, and layouts must also cope with folding mid-session, Split View and wide images.

Do you test on a real iPhone Duo?

Not on a device of our own. We test in Apple's iPhone Duo simulator in Xcode 27.1, which Apple calls "the best way to test the full native experience", and in the resizable simulator in Device Hub. Through TestFlight, you can try every build on your own iPhone Duo before it goes live.

Can you update an app another agency built?

Yes, given access to the source code and your App Store Connect account. If the code is missing or unmaintainable, the free check will say so. Read how to build an app, step by step for what you should own.
