iOS 27 gives every iPhone app owner two deadlines. From April 2027, any app update uploaded to the App Store must be built with the iOS 27 SDK or later, and Apple says iPhone Duo screenshots will be needed too. Until you update, an app built with the iOS 26 SDK or earlier still runs on iPhone Duo, but when the phone is open it sits in a box in the middle of the screen. Most apps need a careful update, not a new app.
This article is for business owners, founders and product managers who have an iPhone app and want to know, in plain terms, what iOS 27 and iPhone Duo mean for it.
What do iOS 27 and iOS 27.1 change for apps?
iOS 27 is this year's main release of Apple's iPhone software. iOS 27.1 is the version that iPhone Duo, Apple's first foldable iPhone, runs at launch. Apple says iOS 27.1 "builds on the foundation of iOS 27 and introduces features that were purpose-built for the new foldable design".
Here is what matters for an app owner, from Apple's own developer pages (accessed Nov 2026).
| Change | What Apple says | Must do, or optional? |
|---|---|---|
| New minimum SDK | From April 2027, iOS and iPadOS apps uploaded to App Store Connect "must be built with the iOS 27 & iPadOS 27 SDK or later" | Must do, for any update after April 2027 |
| iPhone Duo screenshots | Become required from April 2027 (Apple's two wordings are below) | Must do, once you update in 2027 |
| iPhone Duo layouts | Apps built with the iOS 27.1 SDK or later fill the whole display, with toolbars and tab bars shown vertically | Must check before shipping on iOS 27.1 |
| Visual refresh | "Refreshed materials, refined typography, and updated tab and navigation bars" | Arrives when you rebuild; needs a design check |
| Siri and App Intents | Siri "now connects to more of what people do in your app through the App Intents framework" | Optional, worth planning |
| On-device AI | The Foundation Models framework and a new Core AI framework let apps run AI features on the device | Optional |
| Age ratings | A new question on social media features, and from 16 November 2026 new declarations for Shared Location and for Dating and Relationships | Must do; all apps by 12 January 2027 |
| App Store page | New product page headers, search result assets, an Asset Library and a preview tool in App Store Connect | Optional, but useful |
One AI point is worth knowing: Apple says Small Business Program apps with fewer than 2 million total first-time downloads can use its next-generation Foundation Models on Private Cloud Compute "at no cloud API cost".
The two rows that affect almost everyone are the SDK rule and iPhone Duo. They are linked.
Why does iPhone Duo make iOS 27.1 the version that matters?
Apple announced iPhone Duo on 9 September 2026, opened pre-orders on 16 October and started sales on 23 October, with 28 more countries and regions from 30 October. It has a 5.4-inch outer display and a 7.6-inch inner display. Both displays share the same aspect ratio, so an app can carry on from one to the other as the phone opens.

How your app looks depends on the SDK (software development kit) it was last built with: the version of Apple's tools used for the build now in the App Store. Apple's Prepare your app for iPhone Duo page (accessed Nov 2026) sets out three cases:
| Last built with | What people see on iPhone Duo |
|---|---|
| iOS 26 SDK or earlier | The app runs but doesn't adapt. Open, it appears in the centre of the inner display with empty space around it. Closed, its content sits to the left of the status bar and camera. |
| iOS 27 SDK | The app fills most of the inner display, but still keeps clear of the status bar on the right edge. |
| iOS 27.1 SDK or later | The app is optimised for iPhone Duo. It uses the full display, and toolbars and tab bars appear vertically below the status bar. |

Here is the link to the deadline. From April 2027, the iOS 27 SDK is the minimum for any upload, so every app that wants to ship even a small fix next year has to move off the iOS 26 SDK anyway. Going on to iOS 27.1 is where the real iPhone Duo work happens.
The catch is in the last row. Apple says that before you ship a build made with the iOS 27.1 SDK, you should make sure your app's content adapts to the bars becoming vertical. A tab bar that used to run along the bottom now runs down the side. Screens designed around a bottom bar can end up cramped, clipped or overlapping. That is why "just recompile it" is not a safe plan.
Apple also says "apps that use standard SwiftUI and UIKit components adapt automatically to each display". The more custom your screens, the more checking they need.
What are the iOS 27 deadlines for app owners?
| Date | What happens |
|---|---|
| 16 November 2026 | New age rating declarations (Shared Location; Dating and Relationships) appear in App Store Connect and must be answered with your next update |
| 12 January 2027 | All apps must have those declarations completed |
| April 2027 | App uploads must be built with the iOS 27 SDK or later |
| April 2027 | iPhone Duo screenshots become required |
Apple words the screenshot rule in two ways. Its screenshot specifications (accessed Nov 2026) say: "Starting in April 2027, screenshots will be required for any app using the iOS 27.1 SDK or later." Its October news post says: "Starting April 2027, any apps or games submitted will need to include screenshots for iPhone Duo." We plan for the broader reading. If you will update your app in 2027, have iPhone Duo screenshots ready.
April sounds far off. For an app, it isn't: a careful update includes design, building, testing and Apple's review. Our article on iPhone Duo App Store screenshots covers the sizes and the badge in detail.
What should you check in your app now?
You don't need to read any code for this.
- Which SDK built your live app? Ask your developer, or whoever manages App Store Connect. iOS 26 or earlier means the boxed look today, and a forced move before your first update after April 2027.
- How does it look on iPhone Duo? Xcode 27.1 includes an iPhone Duo simulator, which Apple calls "the best way to test the full native experience". A developer can show you your app closed, open, half-folded and rotated.
- Does your app have a bottom tab bar or toolbar? Most apps do. Every screen with one needs checking against the vertical layout.
- Does your App Store page show the Made for iPhone Duo badge? If not, nobody has submitted iPhone Duo screenshots for your app yet.
- Are your age rating answers current? If your app has social features, lets people share their location, or has dating features, the new questions apply to you.
- Do you hold the keys? You need the source code and admin access to your Apple developer account and App Store Connect. If a former agency holds them, sort that out first.
If customers already complain about blank space, read why apps look small on iPhone Duo.
What does it cost to ignore the iOS 27 update?
Nothing breaks overnight. Apple says older apps still run on iPhone Duo. The costs build up quietly.
- You can't ship fixes after April 2027. When a bug appears or a payment provider changes its rules, you need an update. Without the iOS 27 SDK, App Store Connect will not accept it, and the SDK work gets done in a hurry at the worst moment.
- Your app looks unfinished to your best customers. iPhone Duo starts at ₹2,99,900 in India, £1,999 in the UK and $1,999 in the US. People who pay that for a phone notice an app boxed in by empty margins.
- No badge and no shelf space. Apple says optimised apps show "a Made for iPhone Duo badge on product pages across the storefront", and it announced new editorial collections for iPhone Duo apps and games on the App Store. An app without iPhone Duo work is not a candidate for either.
Update, rebuild or build new: which does your app need?
Most apps need an update. A rebuild makes sense only when the existing code is in poor shape. A new app makes sense when you are starting from scratch, or the current app no longer fits how your business works.
| Your situation | What you probably need | Starting price |
|---|---|---|
| A working app, maintained in the last year or two, built in Swift or a maintained cross-platform framework | Update | from ₹80,000 in India, £2,500 in the UK or US$3,000 elsewhere |
| An old codebase nobody has touched for years, an abandoned framework, or a previous developer who has gone | Rebuild | from ₹2,50,000 in India, £4,000 in the UK or US$4,500 elsewhere |
| No app yet, or an app that no longer matches your business | New app, ready for iPhone Duo from day one | from ₹3,00,000 in India, £8,000 in the UK or US$10,000 elsewhere |
An update covers the move to the iOS 27.1 SDK, layouts for both displays and every pose, the vertical bars, testing, new App Store screenshots, your age rating answers and the submission to Apple. For more on costs in your currency, read our guides for India, the UK and the US.
Apple's own fees, such as the US$99 yearly Apple Developer Program membership, are separate.
These are starting prices, not quotes. Your final price is fixed in writing before any work starts, after a free 30-minute call, with a written plan within 5 to 7 business days.
How Digital Architect handles iOS 27 and iPhone Duo updates, end to end
The work touches design, code, testing, the App Store and your launch. We handle all of it. You can read the full service on our iPhone Duo app development page.
- A free iPhone Duo check. Send your App Store link using the form below this article. Within two working days we email back what your app most likely needs and a likely cost. This is an estimate, not a fixed price.
- A free 30-minute call. We go through the findings and your plans for the app.
- A written plan and fixed price within 5 to 7 business days. Scope, timeline and price are agreed in writing before work starts.
- Design in Figma first. You approve your key screens on both displays and half-folded, with the vertical bars in place, before we write code.
- The SDK move and layout work. Native iOS work is in Swift and SwiftUI. Cross-platform apps are handled in Flutter, chosen per project.
- Testing with Apple's tools and your phones. We test in Apple's iPhone Duo and resizable simulators. You get weekly progress and a working build every two weeks through TestFlight, Apple's testing app, to try on your own iPhones.
- Screenshots and submission done for you. We design the iPhone Duo screenshots, update your age rating answers and handle Apple's review.
- Everything in your name. The code, the Apple developer account and App Store Connect stay with you. If we need access to personal data while we work, we sign a written data processing agreement first, in line with UK GDPR and India's DPDP Act 2023. For US health data, we sign a business associate agreement under HIPAA before we touch any.
- After launch, if you want it. We can run App Store optimisation, SEO and ads so the app keeps finding customers.
We work remotely with clients in India, the UK, the US and elsewhere. Calls run from 11 am to 11:30 pm IST every day, which is 5:30 am to 6 pm UK time (6:30 am to 7 pm in BST), and until 1 pm Eastern (2 pm in summer) for US clients.
We have done this end to end before. We designed and built Bharosa, a mental-health platform in India with a patient app, a doctor app and a care portal, more than 350 screens in all; the patient app reached the App Store and Google Play in 10 weeks. For Build-Hive, a construction SaaS for builders in Oxfordshire, we built the core platform in 12 weeks: the web platform is live, and the native iOS and Android apps are built and tested.
Frequently asked questions
Will my app stop working on iOS 27 or iPhone Duo?
No. Apple says apps built with older SDKs still run on iPhone Duo. When the phone is open, they appear in the centre of the screen with empty space around them.
Do I have to update my app before April 2027?
No. The April 2027 rule applies to uploads. But the first update you upload after that date must be built with the iOS 27 SDK or later, and Apple says it will need iPhone Duo screenshots.
Is the iOS 27 SDK enough, or do I need iOS 27.1?
The iOS 27 SDK meets the April 2027 minimum and fills most of the inner display. Only the iOS 27.1 SDK or later gives the full-screen, optimised layout on iPhone Duo.
Do I have to add Siri or AI features?
No. App Intents, Foundation Models and Core AI are optional. Add them when they help your customers.
How long does an iOS 27 and iPhone Duo update take?
It depends on how many screens your app has and the state of the code. Your written plan states the timeline before work starts, and you see a working build every two weeks.
